During my time in Berlin I ended up doing some travel as well. Was Technical Co-Chair of Foundations of Digital Gaming, which was held in Bordeaux, France. Also attended my first Microsoft Faculty Summit in Washington state, where we presented the results of our 3-year grant for the NYU Games for Learning Institute. Got a chance to see Patrick Baudisch's lab at the Hasso Plattner Institute, too, which is well worth a visit.

March 2011

Spring 2011 was an exciting time! Early in the year, Kill Screen published a fun interview that I did with Tracy John. The lab's work was also mentioned in a piece in Electronic Gaming Monthly by Michael Thomsen about future game tech. In March, we had the official ribbon cutting for the brand new Game Innovation Lab at NYU-Poly where I'm Research Director. There was a great panel with Frank Lantz, Evan Narcisse, and Chris Cross, and lots of excellent student demos.

I gave two talks at the annual Game Developers Conference--one at the Game User Research summit (about our work last summer with THQ/Kaos doing video streaming of usability) and the other in the Education Summit (about incorporating research into game education). While I was out in the Bay Area, I also gave a Google Tech Talk about my lab's work. Later in the spring, I presented a poster about our work at CHI, a panel on HCI and Game Development, and we ran an instance of Backchatter (a Twitter game created by Local no. 12).

November 2010

Lots of exciting things to report from Fall 2010! We also showed Wriggle! at Babycastles, and I gave a talk there as part of the US invasion of the Copenhagen Game Collective.

The lab and our work has also gotten some great press--I weighed in about the pros and cons of the new Kinect for a Kotaku column, and even more exciting was our appearance on the 'front page' of wired.com--an excellent piece about our work on movement mechanics in games and how they create emotional and social effects in players.

July 2010

I'm spending the summer again at Marc Alexa's Computer Graphics Lab at the Technische Universität Berlin. I also attended an NSF-sponsored workshop at UC Santa Cruz hosted by Michael Mateas, titled Computational Media: Creating a 21st Century Curriculum for Games and Playable Media. We had some rousing discussions about how to think about the role of games in computer science education, which have really helped me in thinking about our game-related programs here at NYU-Poly.

July 2009

June 2009

May 2009

February 2009

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

March 2009

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

April 2009

<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>
